Pressure Washing Kuranda

Nothing up here ever fully dries

The humidity up here is not seasonal the way it is on the coast. Cloud sits in the canopy, rain comes through in bursts most months of the year, and the tree cover means a surface wet in the morning is still damp at dusk. Add temperatures that rarely drop far and you have close to ideal growing conditions for anything biological.

So surfaces in Kuranda do not get dirty so much as colonised. Moss establishes in the grain of a timber deck. Lichen grips handrails, fence caps, roof sheets and stone. Algae films over paths, steps and driveways until they are slick underfoot. Shade sails and outdoor fabric go black in a way you do not see down in the city. That is living material with a hold on the surface, not dust sitting on it.

The distinction changes what a clean achieves. Lichen on a porous surface takes chemistry and dwell time, not raw pressure, and it often leaves a faint ghost outline where it had eaten in. Killing the biology properly is what buys the time before it returns.

Timber, and the temptation to use more pressure

Most Kuranda houses are timber, frequently elevated, with substantial decks, stairs, balustrades and screens. Timber is where people do the most damage to themselves with a pressure washer.

Softwood decking and old hardwood both tear if you hold a lance too close or work across the grain, leaving a furred surface that traps water and grows moss faster than the deck did before it was cleaned. Timber gets controlled pressure, along the grain, with the chemical doing most of the work. If a deck is due for recoating, plan the wash and the recoat together, because bare timber left through a Kuranda wet will not stay clean long.

Tank water changes the plan

This is the practical point that gets overlooked, and it matters more here than anywhere else we work. A large number of Kuranda properties are not on town supply. They run rainwater tanks, and exterior cleaning uses water from that tank.

A house wash, a roof, a deck and a driveway together can move a serious volume, and in a dry stretch that is your drinking water going onto the concrete. So it gets planned rather than assumed. That means asking about tank capacity and current level before booking, scoping the job to what the supply can reasonably give up, splitting large jobs across visits, or scheduling after decent rain rather than at the end of a dry run.

There is a second tank consideration on roof work. Anything applied to a roof that feeds a drinking tank has to be handled so it does not end up in the tank, which means the downpipe diverters go across or the inlet is isolated before work starts, and the first flush after is directed away. If that has not been discussed with you, it has not been thought about.

Getting up the range
