Gutters here have no spare capacity to give away

Guttering is sized against a design rainfall intensity for the area it is installed in, and the figures used for the wet tropics are among the highest in the country. That sounds like a safety margin. It is the opposite. It means a Cairns gutter is already working at the top of its range in an ordinary February downpour, with nothing held in reserve.

Put fifteen or twenty millimetres of packed leaf litter in the bottom of that gutter and you have not made it slightly less efficient. You have taken a system with no margin and pushed it past its limit, on a roof that can be asked to shed two hundred millimetres in a day.

Where the water goes when it backs up

This is the part most people never think about. A standard quad gutter is set so the front lip sits lower than the back. That is deliberate. When the gutter is overwhelmed, water is meant to spill over the outside edge and fall clear of the building, which is why you sometimes see a sheet of water off the front of a roof in a heavy cell and nothing wrong afterwards.

Block the gutter and that relief stops working. Debris dams the flow, the water level rises past the back edge instead, and it runs behind the gutter onto the top of the fascia, into the eaves lining, and down inside the wall. The visible symptom is a stained soffit or a bubbled eave sheet months later, and by then the fascia timber behind it has been wet for a whole season.

Fascia and box gutters are worse again. They have no outer lip to overflow at, so a blockage sends water straight inside unless the overflow provisions are clear.

What actually fills a gutter in Far North Queensland

It is not the tidy autumn leaf drop that gutter guard brochures picture. It is mango and poinciana leaf, African tulip flowers, raintree litter, and palm frond spikes that lodge crossways and catch everything behind them. Inland, cane ash and fine dust settle through the dry and then the first storms turn that into a silt paste that sets in the bottom of the gutter and chokes the downpipe throat.

That wet sludge is also what rots Colorbond guttering from the inside. It holds moisture permanently against the steel where the base meets the wall of the gutter, and the flat bottom is always the first thing to go. Standing water in a blocked gutter is a reliable Aedes breeding site as well, which matters more here than it does further south.

The right window is September through November, ahead of storm season, and a second look mid wet if you have heavy overhanging growth. If the roof is due for a wash, doing the roof clean first and the gutters after saves a second mess.

When we will tell you not to bother

If the base of the gutter is already rusted through, or the fascia behind it is soft to the touch, clearing it buys you nothing. That run needs replacing and cleaning it just delays the conversation.

Same if you have well fitted guard on a roof with nothing overhanging it. You may not need an annual clean at all, and we would rather check and tell you than sell you a cycle you do not need.
