What the tag is sitting on decides the job

Two walls hit with the same can on the same night are two completely different jobs, and the difference is porosity.

On a sealed surface the paint has nowhere to go. Glass, powder coated aluminium, Colorbond, glazed tile, sealed concrete and sound gloss paint all hold the aerosol on the face of the coating, and the right solvent releases it in one pass with nothing left behind. Those are the easy ones.

Unsealed render, raw blockwork, face brick, bare concrete and old chalky paint are the opposite. Those surfaces are full of open pore structure, and the aerosol carrier wicks into it on contact, taking pigment with it. You are no longer removing paint from a face. You are extracting it out of the depth of the substrate, and how much comes out decides whether you get a clean wall or a shadow.

Why speed changes the outcome

Aerosol paint keeps curing after it dries to touch. Solvent based cans continue to cross link for days, and the UV load and heat up here accelerate that hard. At the same time the humidity keeps the carrier mobile in a porous wall for longer, so the pigment goes on migrating deeper into the render while the film on top goes on hardening.

A tag treated in the first week comes off far more completely than the same tag left for a month. The other reason to move quickly is that visible tags attract more tags, and a wall cleaned promptly and repeatedly usually stops being a target.

The method, and the mistake behind ghosting

On porous work the instinct is to flood the wall with remover and blast it off. That is exactly what produces ghosting. Flooding dissolves the binder and drives the pigment further in before anything has been lifted out, so you finish with a wall that is clean on the surface and stained underneath.

The approach that works is a poultice. The remover goes on in a carrier that holds it against the paint, dwells long enough to soften the film, then gets absorbed back off the wall along with the pigment it has released, rather than rinsed into the substrate. Repeat passes, gentle, working from outside the tag inward so there is no halo at the edges.

Pressure and heat come in at the rinse, at a level the substrate can take, which on soft render is much lower than people expect. Push it and you erode render around the letters and leave a shaped hollow where the tag was.

Coastal sites need care of their own. Aggressive solvents strip powder coating off frames near the Esplanade or the marina, and once that is gone salt gets into the fixings. Rinse water gets captured, as on any commercial job, because solvent and pigment do not belong in the stormwater.

When removal is the wrong answer

Some walls should be repainted, not cleaned. Aged unsealed brick, chalking paint and heavily weathered render will give up the tag and give up the surrounding surface with it, leaving an obvious clean patch that reads as clearly as the graffiti did. Etched glass and two pack tags are the same story: the substrate is damaged, not coated.

For a repeatedly hit wall, a sacrificial anti graffiti coating is the real fix. The next tag comes off with hot water and the coating gets reapplied.
